Crock Pot BBQ Pulled Pork from Food Blogger Puttin’ on the Grits

On a snowy, frigid day in Virginia, Spectrum Stone Designs helps you warm up with this recipe for Crock Pot BBQ Pulled Pork from food blog, Puttin’ on the Grits. As a true southerner, Nicole (food blogger at www.puttinonthegrits.com), knows how to barbecue with the best. For this version of pulled pork, she uses a crock pot to concoct a culinary masterpiece perfect for a cold day. Sit back, relax and warm up with the latest addition to Spectrum Stone Designs’ recipe collection.

BBQ-Pulled-Pork

Crock Pot BBQ Pulled Pork

Pork Butt Shoulder (About 2.5lbs makes 4-5 sandwiches)

Root Beer (Buy name brand – the cheap stuff is too sweet.)

Salt and Pepper

Your favorite BBQ Sauce

1. Cover pork butt with a good layer of salt and pepper. Throw in some garlic salt.

2. Put pork butt in the crock pot on HIGH and set the timer for 8 hours.

3. Pour root beer into crock pot until it’s about 1/2 way up the pork.

4. Cover…and wait.

5. At the end of the 8 hours, shred up the pork with two forks and cover with your favorite sauce.

Simple Slaw
Whole mess of thinly shredded cabbage
A shake of salt and a shake of pepper
1 tsp celery seed
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup mayo
1/4 cup cider vinegar
Put it all in a jar and shake it up. Make several hours ahead of time so it has time to sit.

Put meat on a bun and top off with slaw for a tasty treat.

Bradley Ogden’s Fried Chicken

Chef Bradley Ogden rose to national prominence as the executive chef at San Francisco’s renowned Campton Place Hotel. Ogden and partner Michael Dellar later opened Ogden’s signature restaurant, The Lark Creek Inn just north of San Francisco. Leading critics and publications called it of the best restaurants in the nation. Ogden later opened additional eateries across California including One Market Restaurant in San Francisco, Lark Creek in Walnut Creek and San Mateo, Yankee Pier in Larkspur, Parcel 104 in Santa Clara, and Arterra in Del Mar.

Among other awards, Ogden has been named:

Best Chef California by the James Beard Foundation
One of the Great American Chefs by the International Wine and Food Society
Winner of the Golden Plate Award by the American Academy of Achievement
Chef of the Year by the Culinary Institute of America.

Bradley-Ogden-Fried-Chicken

Ingredients:

2 Medium Frying Chickens, about 3 1/2 pounds each

2 cups buttermilk

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons fresh cracked black pepper

2 tablespoons kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Cooking oil, bacon drippings or clarified butter for frying

Directions:

Wash the chickens, dry with paper towels and cut into serving pieces. Place the chicken pieces in a large shallow pan and pour the buttermilk over them. Refrigerate the chicken for 30 minutes. Place the flour, black pepper, kosher salt and cayenne pepper in a heavy brown paper bag and shake vigorously to blend.

Place a large, heavy, cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Cover the bottom of the skillet with a 1/8 inch layer of cooking oil, drippings or clarified butter. Drain the chicken pieces and place in the bag, several pieces at a time. Shake the bag vigorously to evenly coat the chicken with the seasoned flour. Remove the chicken pieces from the bag, shaking them to remove any excess flour. Place the chicken pieces into the hot fat. Do not crowd the pan. Be sure the leave enough room between the pieces of chicken. Turn the chicken frequently until all sides are even, golden brown. Remove the chicken pieces as they are done, drain on paper towels and keep warm. The white meat should take about 15 minutes, the dark meat a total of 20 to 25 minutes.

Animal shelter garners most votes in Spectrum Stone Designs’ Natural Stone Charity Makeover Contest

Spectrum Stone Designs, Lynchburg’s only fabricator of natural stone countertops, fireplace surrounds and tiles, is excited to announce that the Lynchburg Humane Society has won up to $4,500 in natural stone in the company’s Natural Stone Charity Makeover Contest.

“We are in the process of a capital campaign to build a new animal welfare and adoption center, and natural stone is incorporated into the plans for our new facility,” said Makena Yarbrough, executive director of the Lynchburg Humane Society. “Spectrum Stone Designs does beautiful work, and we are excited to have the opportunity to utilize their natural stone in our new building.”

From Dec. 15 through Dec. 31, 2013, people voted on Facebook for the charity they would like to see win up to $4,500 worth of natural stone from Spectrum Stone Designs. Other charities participating in the contest included:

The Lynchburg Humane Society was the charity with the most votes as of noon on Dec. 31, 2013, so the animal shelter won the natural stone makeover from Spectrum Stone Designs. Natural stone can be used in the nonprofit organization’s facility for new kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, desks or outdoor seating. Other uses include fireplace surrounds, staircases and outdoor kitchens.

“We are so grateful for all of the wonderful work nonprofit organizations do to make our community a better place,” said Page Eggleston, president of Spectrum Stone Designs. “Spectrum Stone Designs is honored to have the opportunity to give something back to these amazing charities that give so much to Lynchburg every day.”

Spectrum Stone Designs will install the new natural stone for the winning charity after Jan. 15, 2014.
